CONSTITUTION (AMENDMENT No. 24) ACT, 1936.


AN ACT SO TO AMEND ARTICLE 12 OF THE CONSTITUTION AS TO ABOLISH SEANAD EIREANN AS A CONSTITUENT HOUSE OF THE LEGISLATURE CREATED BY THAT ARTICLE, AND TO MAKE ALL SUCH FURTHER OR OTHER AMENDMENTS OF THE CONSTITUTION AS MAY BE CONSEQUENTIAL ON OR RENDERED NECESSARY BY SUCH AMENDMENT OF THE SAID ARTICLE 12. [29th May, 1936.]

BE IT ENACTED BY THE OIREACHTAS OF SAORSTÁT EIREANN AS FOLLOWS:—

Amendment of Article 12 of the Constitution.

1. Article 12 of the Constitution is hereby amended as follows, that is to say:—

(a) by the deletion therefrom of the words “two Houses” and the insertion therein of the words “one House” in lieu of the said words so deleted; and

(b) by the deletion therefrom of the words “and the Senate (otherwise called and herein generally referred to as ‘Seanad Eireann’).

Consequential amendments of the Constitution.

2. (1) The Constitution is hereby amended by the deletion therefrom of the several Articles thereof mentioned in Part I of the Schedule to this Act.

(2) The several Articles of the Constitution mentioned in the first column of Part II of the Schedule to this Act are hereby severally and respectively amended in the manner stated in the second column of the said Part II opposite the mention of each such Article in the said first column.

Short title.

3. This Act may be cited as the Constitution (Amendment No. 24) Act, 1936.
